“Essentially what photography is, is life lit up.” — Sam Abell
Being put on the spot. Recently, I was with a group of young students (I was showing them these images I had taken) and we were chatting about photography and the constant changes. Most of the chat centered around technical aspects with everyone fully engaged in the flow of conversation except for one person who simply asked the question - what is photography? The lively chatter soon became silence as everyone looked at one another.
And of course, by now, most were looking in my direction and I just like them had been caught up in the whole technical end. I was engrossed as the students debated back and forward on lighting, cameras, backups, software and so on. Needless to say, I was now firmly put on the spot. And if you have ever being put on the spot, you know what happens next - most times your mind goes blank but this time I knew exactly what to say.
I was able to draw on one of my favorite quotes - "Essentially what photography is, is life lit up.” And for me, this is a very simple quote with few words but it's meaning captures photography at it's heart. It is about life lit up, about people, their journeys, a truly remarkable keepsake of memories that last for always.
Sometimes, it is simply about asking the right question because soon we were all back fully engaged in the real essence of what photography is about. That was really the most inspiring part of the day and everyone agreed.
